HEX, RGB, and HSL: What Is the Difference?

Digital colors can be represented in several different formats. Three of the most common formats you will encounter in web design and digital projects are HEX, RGB, and HSL.

Although the formats look different, they can describe the same color. Understanding how each one works makes it easier to choose the right format for a particular task.

What Is a HEX Color?

HEX is short for hexadecimal. It represents a color using a six-character code based on three pairs of hexadecimal values.

A typical HEX color looks like:

#F8C8DC

The first pair represents red, the second represents green, and the third represents blue. Each pair can represent a value from 00 to FF.

HEX colors are particularly common in HTML and CSS because they provide a compact way to write a color value.

What Is RGB?

RGB stands for red, green, and blue. Instead of hexadecimal notation, RGB uses three numerical channel values.

For example:

rgb(248, 200, 220)

Each channel normally ranges from 0 to 255. A value of 0 means that the corresponding color channel contributes no intensity, while 255 represents the maximum channel value.

What Is HSL?

HSL stands for hue, saturation, and lightness. Unlike RGB, HSL describes colors using characteristics that can be easier to understand when adjusting a color visually.

  • Hue represents the basic color position on the color wheel.
  • Saturation controls how intense or muted the color appears.
  • Lightness controls how light or dark the color appears.

HEX vs RGB vs HSL

Each format has its own practical advantages.

  • HEX is concise and widely used in HTML and CSS.
  • RGB is useful when working directly with red, green, and blue channel values.
  • HSL can be convenient when adjusting hue, saturation, or lightness.

There is no single format that is always the best choice. The appropriate format depends on the application and the workflow you are using.

Why Does a Color Picker Show Multiple Formats?

An image color picker may provide several formats because different users and applications work with colors differently.

A web developer may prefer a HEX value for CSS, while another project may be easier to work with using RGB or HSL. Showing multiple representations allows the selected color to be used more conveniently.

Conclusion

HEX, RGB, and HSL are different ways of representing digital colors. HEX is compact and common in CSS, RGB describes the red, green, and blue channels directly, and HSL describes hue, saturation, and lightness.

Once you understand the basic differences, switching between these formats becomes much easier when working with digital colors.
